#12 Mavericks hold on late to complete sweep of Quincy

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the series sweep of the Quincy Hawks after a 12-9 win on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.

The two teams went back and forth through the early stages of the game including the first tie at 4-4 in the fifth inning. The Mavericks had an opportunity in the bottom of the inning when they had bases loaded and nobody out but failed to get one in.

The score was tied at 5-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning when the Mavericks got a big swing from redshirt freshman Trevor Tse. The Poway, Calif. native hit his first collegiate home run on a 1-0 pitch that gave the Mavericks a 6-5 lead at the time.

Logan Gross came in during the top of the seventh and faced a bases loaded nobody out situation of his own after allowing an intentional walk and a single through the left side. The Rifle product induced an infield fly, a strikeout and a foul out to deep left field to spoil the scoring threat.

Gross ended up picking up the win despite allowing three runs in the top of the eighth inning. It was his first collegiate win.

The Mavericks were able to plate five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with two of those runs coming as the ball didn't leave the infield. Kennedy Hara delivered a two-run double to take the lead 9-8 but picked up two insurance runs that they would need later in the inning.

Noah Neufeld delivered a safety squeeze that scored Joey Blank while the next batter Brooks Bachman had a bunt single that scored Hara from third to give the Mavericks an 11-8 lead at the time.

Ezra Farmer ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 12-8 while Quincy would score one in the top of the ninth inning but that's all the closer they would get.

A total of 13 pitchers were used in the game with the Maverick using seven.

Ezra Farmer and Tse each finished with three hits while a total of four Mavericks had multi-hit games.

Quincy was led by Byron Blaise who finished 4-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and seven runs driven in.

The Mavericks will continue their home stand at the beginning of the schedule next weekend as they host Montana State Billings. The series is scheduled to begin on Thursday afternoon at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.
