GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team extended their home opening winning streak to five on Friday (Feb. 13) afternoon after a 10-5 win over the Quincy Hawks after a late-inning offensive surge fueled the win at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.
The Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead after a sacrifice fly by
Landon Nunes scored
Kolby Felix in the first inning. Felix led the game off with a single to center field and moved over to third on a perfectly executed hit and run by
Ezra Farmer.
Quincy went on to score five unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings to jump out to a 5-1 lead but that is all they would get.
Colorado Mesa tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning with three of those runs going as unearned as a throwing error allowed
Kolby Felix to reach first, extending the inning.
Ezra Farmer was the next man to step to the plate and he delivered a two-run single.
Felix stepped to the plate in the sixth inning and delivered the exclamation point on the win. The Sun City, Ariz. native sent a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left center field for his first round tripper of the season and made the score 7-5 after six innings.
Redshirt freshman
Trevor Tse laced a two-run double in the seventh and newcomer
Isaac Torres put the icing on the cake with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Mavericks first three hitters in the order batted 7-for-13 (.538) with three doubles, a home run, five runs scored, and five runs driven in.
Ezra Farmer finished 3-for-4 and raised his average on the early season to .579.
Sophomore
Justin Schramm earned the win out of the bullpen and was the third pitcher to reach the mound in the game. Schramm pitched three scoreless and hitless innings allowing just two walks and striking out four to earn his first career win.
Sage Ferguson pitched the final two innings of the game and allowed two hits and struck out five of the eight batters he faced.
The series will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12pm. The teams will play a nine-inning game and a seven-inning game in the night cap.
