SPEARFISH, S.D.- Following a draw against the number one team in the country, the Colorado Mesa University women's soccer team came up short against the Black Hills State Yellowjackets 2-1. This setback drops the Mavs to 6-3-1 while the Yellowjackets improve to 7-1-3.Â
The game started out innocently enough with both teams getting a feel for the game, but the first shot of the game proved to amount to something. Â
Just five minutes into the game, the Mavericks earned a free kick that was placed near the center of the field. Sarah Dunn booted the ball near the box where Angelina Kazinec flicked it to Parker Mairs, who put the ball in the back of the net to give the Mavs the early lead. Â
Mari Ige got a shot off just a minute later, but her shot was blocked by the defense. The Yellowjackets got their first shot of the game in the ninth minute of play, but it was easily dealt with by Keely Wieczorek. Â
Kazinec and Olivia Barrett continued the barrage of shots with a couple of their own but both fell short. Both teams proceeded to trade shots in the 20th minute, but both were off target. Â
In the 26th minute, the Yellowjackets had a chance to equalize after breaking through the Mavs defense, but their shot was saved by Wieczorek once again. Â
Barrett managed to get another shot off in the 33rd minute, but it was dealt with by the defense. The Yellowjackets took two more shots before halftime, but both came up empty. Â
Two minutes into the second half, the Mavs got two more shots from Kazinec off a free kick but both were dealt with by the goalkeeper. Â
Just before the 52nd minute, the Yellowjackets then went on a counterattack after a Mavs throw-in. They looked to build-up play in the Mavs defensive third and managed to get shot by Wieczorek to tie the game at 1. Â
Sarah Dunn looked to respond for the Mavs in the 55th minute, but her shot was off target. Kazinec also attempted to find the go-ahead goal but her shot also came up empty. Â
The Mavs fired three more shots before the hour mark but all three missed the mark, the Yellowjackets responded with a shot of their own but it missed as well. Â
The Yellowjackets kept Wieczorek busy as she thwarted two more shots. Ellie Duncan then responded just 20 seconds after that with a shot of her own but it was saved by the goalkeeper. Both goalkeepers remained busy as they saved the next few shots. Â
Both teams traded possession until the 81st minute when the Yellowjackets went on a counterattack after a Mavs set piece. They rushed down the field and scored the go-ahead goal with less than ten minutes to go. Â
The Mavs attempted to find an equalizer, but it was no use as the game ended in the Yellowjackets' favor. The victory marked the Yellowjackets' first ever win over the Mavs.Â
Kazinec led the team in shots with four while Mairs scored her third goal of the season. Dunn also picked up her first assist of the year. Wieczorek finished her day with six saves. Â
The Mavs return home for a four-game homestand starting Friday, Oct. 9 against New Mexico Highlands. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Community Hospital Unity Field. Â
