Mavs return to the road for final nonconference games

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Taking on a pair of familiar opponents this week, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team heads to the road this coming Wednesday and Sunday for their final two games of nonconference action.

The Mavericks will play in a more spread out schedule this week with them first taking on Adams State University on Wednesday at 3 P.M. before taking a couple days to regroup prior to their trip up north to South Dakota Mines on Sunday for a 1 P.M. game.

While both games are against RMAC opponents, the results will not affect their conference standings due to these being scheduled nonconference matchups.

LAST WEEK'S GAME

Winning their lone contest against Simon Fraser University this last week, the Mavs played to a 4-3 victory on Friday to stay undefeated at home this season.

Playing in the high scoring affair, three different Mavs totaled goals for the squad with Manuel Ponce Casas leading the group, scoring two himself. The duo of Nathan Hernandez and Connor Chilson also scored goals with Chilson's being the first of his career.

In addition to Ponce Casas' two goals he also recorded an assist in the game to finish with five points.

This was the Mavs' fifth time in history to take on the Red Leafs with them remaining undefeated against them for a 4-0-1 record all-time.

This season the Mavs have had eight different players combine for 12 goals through just five games played.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS

Outscoring opponents this year 13-10 this year, the Mavs have the fifth ranked offense in the conference while scoring seven goals in their last two games.

As a whole they are averaging 2.60 goals per game while taking roughly 10.8 shots.

Serving as the team leader in goals is Kamden Kooiman with the freshman totaling three this season. Ponce Casas and Hernandez are the only other Mavs to record more than one goal apiece with each of them owning two. Beyond those two five others have one goal each.

12 different players have recorded assists as well with no one owning more than two.

Nathan Beck has started in the net for Colorado Mesa every game with the redshirt sophomore owning 16 saves to this point while facing 74 shots. He owns a .615 save percentage with one shutout this season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS

Taking on the Grizzlies in their first game of the week, Adams State is 1-3-1 this season while closing out last week going 1-0-1 against opponents. In their Thursday game they earned their first win of the year against Wayland Baptist University taking home a 5-4 victory.

In the RMAC Preseason poll the Grizzlies were voted to finish 11th in the conference after fairing a tough season in 2024 with a 2-12-2 record.

So far they have been led by Avery Richard and Eric Kidson with the pair combining for six goals. Richards has totaled four of those goals while being the team leader with nine points.

Offensively they have only scored eight goals while giving up 26 in return.

Following Wednesday's game, the Grizzlies take on South Dakota Mines on Friday to close out their nonconference schedule as well.

Prior to Sunday's game against the Mavs the Hardrockers currently own a 3-0-2 record this season while winning their lone game against Trinity Bible College this last week in a monster 10-0 victory.

They have taken on teams from three different levels this year while tying with both Division II Colorado Christian University and Division I Air Force and earning wins against three NAIA schools.

Offensively they have been led by Nickolas North, who has scored four goals this season. In total the team has scored a staggering 21 goals so far while giving up just four to opponents. Four different goalkeepers have shared the net with only one of them giving up the four goals.
