NAMPA, Idaho – Playing in seven-goal match this afternoon the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team fell in a 4-3 decision against the Nighthawks of Northwest Nazarene University as they conclude their trip to Idaho at NNU Soccer Field.
With the loss the Mavericks now move to 1-2-1 on the season while the Nighthawks remain undefeated at 3-0-1.
In the multi-goal fest, there were a total of six people to score goals in the game with three different Mavs recording one goal each. That trio consisted of Jonah Elstad, Justin Ibrahim and Kamden Kooiman.
Following an offensive performance where the Mavs struggled to find opportunities on Thursday, Colorado Mesa had a much different approach today as they scored just seven minutes into the game thanks to a Elstad header.
Elstad's goal came after a quick push down field with Ibrahim assisting him on a flick pass to which Elstad headed into the right side of the net. Elstad's goal was the first of his career.
Despite the early lead for Colorado Mesa, the Nighthawks were able to even up the match soon after as they scored in the 18th minute on a Rylan McPherson goal.
It was then just two minutes later in the 20th minute that the Nighthawks scored again with this time being Derek Johnson as the scorer.
Still pressing the Mavs' defense, the Nighthawks scored once more in the first half with McPherson scoring his second goal of the game on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the 31st minute.
Facing a two-goal deficit the Mavs started to look like themselves again in the 32nd minute with them returning the scoring favor on a Kamden Kooiman goal as he found the back of the net for the third time this season. Kooiman's goal also came from short range as he was assisted by Cain Castellon in the effort.
Following the five-goal half there was a total of 15 shots already taken in the match with the Nighthawks holding a 9-5 advantage.
Continuing the crazy action into the second half there were a total of two more goals scored between the two teams with each of them having some drama involved.
The Nighthawks were the first to begin that action with them scoring in the 61st minute on an own goal suffered by the Mavs. In the defensive miscue, Caleb Putney for NNU attempted to cross a ball from nearly parallel to the net with the flying ball being tapped in the wrong direction by a Colorado Mesa defender and in turn scoring on their own goal.
The own goal may have put the Mavs down two, but it was just three minutes later that the game changed again with Colorado Mesa scoring in the 64th minute on a ricocheted corner kick to which Ibrahim hammered into the net.
While the chaos seemed that it was never going to end, it was after Ibrahim's goal that the scoring did take a halt with the final 26 minutes being scoreless.
Colorado Mesa attempted 12 shots in the game with six of them being on goal. The Nighthawks in return attempted 15 shots with five of theirs being on goal.
Concluding their weekend in Idaho, the Mavs now return home to Grand Junction this following week when they take on another GNAC opponent in Simon Fraser University on Saturday, Sept. 20 for a 9 A.M. start.
