GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The #15 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team continued their winning ways on a stormy Thursday night this evening as they defeated the Nighthawks of Northwest Nazarene University by a score of 2-0 at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Improving their win streak to three, the Mavericks are now 3-0 on the young season with them also collecting their third straight shutout in the victory.
Leading the attack for the team was the pair of Peyton Bundy and Kylie Wells with each of them collecting a goal. Bundy's goal marked the first of hers for the season while this was Well's fourth goal on the year and third straight game scoring.
Bundy's goal came early in the match with her scoring just eight minutes into the contest after receiving a pair of nicely touched passes in the penalty area. In Bundy's goal she was assisted by both Olivia Bariao-Arce and Wells with Bariao-Arce knocking the ball up to Wells in front of the net before she then dumped it off to Bundy for the short-range score.
The Mavs led 1-0 at halftime with them dominating the offensive game outshooting the Nighthawks 5-2.
Clinging to the one goal lead, the Mavs were able to apply more pressure later in the evening with Wells coming around this time to put the game away for good.
After being fouled in the penalty area, Wells attempted the Mavs first penalty kick of the season for Colorado Mesa with her being successful as she hammered it into the left corner of the net and past a diving goalkeeper.
Wells finished with three points on the night, and this season has now totaled nine already.
Keely Wieczorek had another flawless night in the net to compliment the strong defense with her collecting two saves on eight shots faced en route to her 23rd shutout of her career.
Over the whole game the Mavs were able to lead in both categories of shots taken (14-8) and corner kicks (5-2). They also committed just six fouls compared to the Nighthawks eight with no cards being drawn for either team.
Heading to the road now the Mavs will travel to Wyoming this weekend as they take on the Cowgirls of University of Wyoming on Sunday afternoon for a 1 P.M. start. Streaming can be found on the Mountain West Network.
