Mavericks' season ends with loss to Angelo State

CANYON, Texas – After winning their opening game against Lubbock Christian University to advance in the NCAA Regionals, the Mavericks fell short to end their day in the second game as they suffered a close 1-0 defeat to Angelo State University to conclude their season at Schaeffer Park.

Finishing with a record of 1-2 at the regional site the Mavs took third place out of the four schools. They finish the 2025 campaign with a record of 40-17 while reaching 40 wins for the second year in a row and third time in the last four seasons.

In their two-game day, the Mavs defeated Lubbock Christian this afternoon at 1:30 P.M. by a score of 3-2 in 10 innings with the loser of the game being eliminated. Following that game the Mavs then faced off with Angelo State once again at 5 P.M. as the Rambelles were defeated by West Texas A&M in the 11:30 A.M. game by a score of 3-2.

With the Angelo State win they will now face off with West Texas A&M for the region championship tomorrow, having the winner go onto the super regionals.

Battling to a resilient 3-1 win in the first game of the day, the Mavs played a total of 10 innings in their defeat over the Chaps with it ultimately being Olivia Litzen who served as the team's hero.

Litzen was responsible for all three of the team's RBIs in the win as she tied the game up in the fourth inning before bringing home the winning run in the 10th.

Over the course of the game, Lubbock Christian held the lead early in the contest as they struck first with a run in the first inning on a successful first and third steal. The lead stayed in favor of the Chaps over the next six outs until Colorado Mesa then retaliated with them tying it up at one apiece in the fourth.

Chloe Valdez roped a double down the left field line to start that inning with her eventually reaching third base on a wild pitch before Litzen would drive her in on a sacrifice fly to left field. Valdez narrowly was safe at home on the play with the catcher dropping the ball as she was applying the tag.

For the next 33 outs, the game stayed tied at the one run each as neither team could break through the stalemate.

During that time that there were two runners thrown out at home plate with Colorado Mesa being gunned down from left field in the sixth inning and Lubbock Christian being out at home in the bottom of the ninth inning to hold off a walk off win.

In the top of the 10th the game then saw its first runs be scored in five innings with Mavs taking their game-winning lead. The pair of Ally Distler and Khloe Kubitschek were both able to reach in that inning with Litzen then serving as the hero as she drove a single into left center for both base runners to score.

The Chaps responded with a double to start off the bottom of the 10th to make things interesting but wouldn't fare anymore offense as the next three batters were retired in order.

Jessalyn Gallegos earned her 19th win in the victory as she started and relieved in the circle with Preslee Christensen pitching two innings between Gallegos' nine innings of work.

Nine hits were managed by the offense as well with Litzen and Myah Arrieta each finishing with two hits to lead the squad.

Playing then in a back-to-back game to follow against the Rambelles, the Mavs concluded their day as they fell in a tight 1-0 decision with one hit making the difference.

That one hit came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Angelo State was able to get a runner on base thanks to an error by the CMU defense. The runner got all the way to second base on the error with an ensuing single then being the difference maker as the runner was able to come around and score giving the Rambelles the lead.

Colorado Mesa struggled to respond offensively after and prior to that point as the Mavs only recorded one hit total in the game when Ally Distler hit a single in the fourth inning.

Serving as the reason for the limited offense by both teams was the pitching duel that took place with both Angelo State's Amelia Hatthorn and Colorado Mesa's Preslee Christensen each going complete games and combining for five hits total.

Christensen allowed just four hits to the Rambelles while striking out three and walking one. Her only run given up was unearned.

Christensen concludes her career at Colorado Mesa with a lifetime record of 30-11 with a 2.23 ERA and 185 strikeouts.

She is joined by Myah Arrieta, Ally Distler and Chloe Valdez as the four seniors to depart heading into this offseason.
