No. 22 Mavs wrap up high-scoring sweep

GOLDEN, Colo. — The No. 22 Colorado Mesa University baseball team wrapped up a high-scoring sweep of Colorado School of Mines on Saturday with a 14-9 win in the final game.

Catcher Noah Neufeld hit a pair of home runs and drove in five runs in the Mavericks' 16-hit attack and Cameron Cartwright also hit a home run, his sixth of the season.

Tied 4-4 after two innings, the Mavericks (22-8, 15-1 RMAC) scored in three of the next four innings to pull ahead 12-5 before the Orediggers (10-23, 5-11 RMAC) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Neufeld drilled a three-run home run to center field in the second inning after Stevenson Reynolds singled and Joey Blank drew a walk. Paul Schoenfeld reached on a fielder's choice, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Jackson Helberg's double to the right-center field gap.

Mines tied the game with four runs off CMU starter Ethan Voss, the only runs he allowed through four innings. Junior Brenden Morris, the fourth Maverick pitcher used, got his first career win with 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit. Jordan Pace threw the final two innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two, for his first save of the season.

Cartwright hit a solo home run in the third and Reynolds singled and eventually scored on a fielding error, and Paul Schoenfeld tripled in a run in the fourth. He came home on a double by Helberg. A base hit by Bank made it 9-4.

Neufeld's second home run of the day came with Blank on base in the sixth to put CMU up 12-5, but the Orediggers pulled within three runs before the Mavs added two insurance runs in the ninth. Schoenfeld led off with a double and Kolby Felix reached on an error, which allowed Schoenfeld to score. Jack Rogers brought Felix home on a base hit, and Pace closed it out in the bottom of the inning.

Helberg finished 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI and Neufeld drove in five runs with his two home runs, his third and fourth of the season in only 17 at-bats.

Of Colorado Mesa's 16 hits, eight were for extra bases: four doubles, one triple and three home runs. Colorado School of Mines hit 13 singles and two doubles in the game. The Maverick pitchers struck out eight batters, the Orediggers' staff fanned only three.

In the series, the Mavericks outscored Mines 61-25 and hit nine home runs.

The win ran CMU's winning streak to nine straight, the Mavs' second straight series sweep after winning three of four against CSU Pueblo. The Mavericks play a nonconference game at Utah Valley on Tuesday in Orem, Utah, which will be broadcast on ESPN+ at 2 p.m. They return to The Diamond on Friday, April 4, to open a four-game series against Adams State.
