GOLDEN, Colo. – The No. 22 Colorado Mesa ran their win streak to six games as they defeated the host Colorado School of Mines Orediggers 9-7 on Thursday (Mar. 27) evening at Darden Field to open the four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.
It wasn't easy as the Mavericks trailed early in the matchup by scores of 2-0 and 4-3 before taking a 7-4 lead after three innings of play. Two of those runs came off the bat of
Kennedy Hara who went big fly in the top of the second inning.
Mines chipped away at the lead scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to eventually tie the game in the seventh inning. During that same stretch, the Oredigger relievers were able to retire nine Mavericks in a row which fueld their come back effort.
The Mavericks took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning as
Brent Renteria scored on a passed ball and
Kennedy Hara scored on a double by
Paul Schoenfeld that gave Colorado Mesa the 9-7 advantage. Renteria pinch ran for pinch hitter
Jack Rogers who singled with two outs.
No Maverick had more than one hit in the game but
Joey Blank and Hara each had two runs driven in while
Kolby Felix scored a pair of runs.
Tristan Wolf earned the win pitching the final two and a third innings of shutout baseball. Wolf earned his first win of the season by allowing just one hit and striking out four including the final batter he faced.
Wolf entered the game with two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at 7-7. The senior was able to strike out Tyler Pina in just three pitches to retire the side and end the threat.
Five pitchers ended up with appearances in the game and combined to strikeout 10 Orediggers with
Tyler Glowacki and Wolf each striking out four.
The two teams will continue the series on Friday with a doubleheader (two seven inning games) beginning at 12pm from Darden Baseball Field.
