POMONA, Calif. – The No. 10 Colorado Mesa baseball team won their fourth consecutive season opener after holding on late for a 4-2 win over the host Cal Poly Pomona Broncos on Thursday (Feb. 6) evening at Scolinos Ballpark.
The Mavericks carried a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning, but that may be where the story starts. The Broncos were able to find the holes and began the inning off with three consecutive singles with the third single scoring a run to make it 4-2.
After the third single, Colorado Mesa brought in incumbent closer
JJ Almeda with runners on first and second with nobody out. Almeda proceeded to walk the first batter he faced to put the winning run on first base.
The Lynwood, Calif. native then struck out the next batter on a 3-2 count as he blew a fastball by him for the first out of the inning. He then struck out his next batter he faced on a 2-2 swing and miss before retiring the side on three straight pitches for his third consecutive strikeout and his first save of the season.
Maverick starter
Ethan Voss was flat-out dominant on the mound in his 2025 debut. Voss pitched five shutout innings and allowed just one hit, hit one batter and struck out three. The Burnsville, Minn. native was efficient in his five innings throwing just 56 pitches with just 16 of those being called a ball (40 strikes, 16 balls).
Tyler Glowacki,
Jett Walker, and
Jordan Ellison combined for the three innings and combined to allow one run (unearned) on four hits and struck out three out of the bullpen.
Stevenson Reynolds gave the Mavericks the early lead with an RBI double to left center that scored
Paul Schoenfeld for a 1-0 lead after three innings. Reynolds added an RBI single up the middle that scored
Kolby Felix for a 2-0 lead midway through the fifth inning. Reynolds finished his day going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs driven in.
Later in the fifth inning,
Christos Stefanos drove in
Ethan Nunez on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Then in the seventh inning, Nunez gave the Mavericks a 4-0 lead after a sacrifice fly that scored Felix.
Schoenfeld and Felix also finished with multi-hit games.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow (Feb. 7) beginning at 3pm mountain time.
