KEARNEY, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team dominated Hastings College in a 7-0 morning victory but was downed 6-1 by the host University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers in the afternoon as the Mavericks split a pair of Friday duals here at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
The split left the Mavericks, who will play Rockhurst University here on Saturday afternoon, with a 6-4 overall record.
William Leschig and
Romain Payan both went 3-1 throughout the day while
Jamison Pfingston paired with Payan for a pair of doubles victories. Pfingston did not play in singles.
Against Hastings (0-5), the Mavs won all three doubles matches by 6-0 scores.
They then conceded just eight total games to the Broncos while sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets.
Payan was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles while
Diogo Manzano also blanked his opponent in the sixth flight.
Henry Scheck,
Philemon Jabin and
Emil Hultman were all victorious by 6-0 margins in the first set of their No. 1, 3 and 5 singles matches as well.
The Mavs also battled against UNK, as Payan and Pfingston defeated Jip Mens and Andy Brisdon, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles before Leschig and Scheck dropped a 7-4 decision in the No. 2 doubles tie-breaker against Alex Jaulin and Ivan Melnik as the Lopers escaped with the doubles point.
In singles, the Lopers won five of the six singles matches, coming out on top in all three of the set tie-breakers. The Lopers also got a 3-set win at No. 6 singles to complete the dual.
However, Leschig was able to record the win at No. 2 singles for CMU, taking down Melnik, 6-3, 6-2, which made the overall dual score, 2-1 after Mens, ranked 19
th in the ITA's NCAA Division II Central Regional Rankings, got past Scheck, 6-4, 6-1 in the top flight.
However, the Lopers won the remaining four singles matches to improve to 5-6. The Lopers were also able to avenge CMU's 5-2 win in the Mavs' first dual of the campaign on Sept. 13 during the fall season.
Payan was involved in tie-breakers in both sets of his No. 3 singles match against Adrian Constantin, but succumbed 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) while Manzano won the second set over Jaulin at No. 6 singles, before eventually going down 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
