CONROE, Texas – In the second day of action at the 2025 DII First Pitch Invitational, the #21 Colorado Mesa University Softball Team saw themselves drop a pair of games to ranked regional foes this afternoon as they suffered losses to both #11 Angelo State University and #1 UT Tyler.
Both of the games today were decided by five runs or less, with each squad being fellow NCAA Regional qualifiers a year ago. The Mavs' loss to UT Tyler was the first time the two had met since the Patriots ended their season last season, before eventually winning the National Championship.
Colorado Mesa is now 1-3 on the season and will play twice more in the Invitational.
Below is a short summary of each game:
#11 Angelo State 6, #21 Colorado Mesa 1
In the first of the team's ranked showdowns on the day it was the Rambelles who were victorious as the Mavs were limited offensively to just three hits while struggling to crawl back from an early deficit.
In the game, the Rambelles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of hits and an error that proved to be costly for the Mavs. Starting pitcher Sophia Tassinari only lasted one third of an inning before being relieved by Jessalyn Gallegos who pitched the rest of the game.
Gallegos went 6.2 innings in relief while giving up five hits on three runs with seven strikeouts for a new career-high in innings pitched and strike outs.
Despite going down early, the Mavs tacked one run back on the board when Ally Distler hit the first Maverick home run of the year in the third inning on a solo shot to make it 3-1. Distler finished the game 2-3 with the team's lone RBI and two extra base hits.
Both the fourth and fifth innings were held scoreless to keep the contest within two runs, but an RBI double in the sixth and a solo shot in the seventh inning for Angelo were too much for the Mavs to overcome as the team only managed one base runner in the final six outs.
Kamdyn Hagerty was the owner of the Mavs' only other hit in the game, going 1-3 with a double.
Reigning Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year, Cheyenne Floyd went six innings for Angelo while giving up the three hits and one run. She finished the game with eight strikeouts to secure her second win of the season and help improve Angelo's record to 3-0.
#1 UT Tyler 3, #21 Colorado Mesa 0
In a rematch of last year's ending to the season, the Mavs faced off with the #1 team in the nation but ultimately fell short as they lost 3-0, thanks to dominant pitching from the Patriots.
Primrose Aholelei pitched the entire game for the Patriots going seven innings while only giving up two hits and striking out five to shutout the Mavs for the first time this season.
The Patriots only had four hits off Maverick pitching in return but were able to capitalize on those hits with a two-run triple in the third from Bailey Krolczyk and an RBI double in the fourth from Jordyn De Los Santos.
Colorado Mesa struggled to apply pressure on the bases with only two runners reaching base in the game.
Preslee Christensen started the game and went three innings while giving up two runs before Marisa Nehm pitched the final three innings, giving up one run.
Gathering the only two hits for Colorado Mesa were Chloe Valdez and Kamdyn Hagerty who both finished 1-3.
UT Tyler is now 3-0 in their stay at the Invitational.
The Mavs will conclude their weekend tomorrow when they play their final two games of the trip taking on two more Lone Star Conference opponents in St. Mary's University first at 9:00 A.M. MST and then Texas A&M Int'l after at 11:30 A.M. MST. Live stats will be provided for the first game but not the second.
