Second overtime goal concludes Mavs’ season in NCAA Regionals

DALLAS, Texas – After over 100 minutes of scoreless play and looking to potentially enter into a penalty kick shootout, a second-overtime goal in the 107th minute took down the Mavericks this afternoon as the #22 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team was defeated in the First Round of the NCAA DII Women's Soccer Championship by Texas Woman's University, 1-0, at Mountain View College Turf Field.

Being eliminated from the Tournament, Colorado Mesa now concludes their season following today's game. No. 5 seed Texas Woman's will now advance to take on No. 1 seed Dallas Baptist on Sunday.

The Mavs end the year with a 14-4-2 record while reaching the NCAA Regional Tournament for the third year in a row and seventh time in program history.

In the 2025 campaign the Mavs saw the team rewrite history as they became the first school in the RMAC to give up zero goals in conference play while recording a shutout in every single match played. Over the course of the entire season CMU totaled 15 shutouts with 12 of them coming in a row. Their six goals given up all season is a new school record as well.

They finish today as the No. 1 defense in the nation with a goals-against average of 0.263 and the highest shutout percentage at 0.789.

In the battle with the Pioneers, the Mavs outshot their opponent 18-10 in the match but were burdened with multiple foul calls as they led that category 17-8.

Just 11 shots total were managed in the first half with Colorado Mesa holding the slight edge at 6-5.

The Pioneers challenged with seven corner kicks as well compared to the Mavericks' one, but the CMU defense held strong in keeping the game scoreless.

In that half, Kendra Chapin also made one save for the Mavs with this being her first start and appearance in her career. She finished with two saves total in the game.

The second half featured much of the same look as the first half with the only difference being that Colorado Mesa dominated the shooting column even more with a 9-1 advantage.

The game entered overtime for the first time in each of the school's seasons this year with the first 10-minute period featuring just one shot total before the second overtime period led to the eventual game-winner.

Six minutes and 47 seconds passed in the second overtime period with Bri Luna then changing the game as she delivered a high curving shot into the top left corner to give the Pioneers the win.

Due to overtime being a golden goal rule, the first to score wins, with the game ending there.

Kylie Wells and Parker Mairs led the Mavs' offensive efforts with five and four shots respectively, but all attempts on goal were saved by the Texas Woman's goalkeeper.

Colorado Mesa will now head into the offseason with All-Region and CSC All-Academic honors being released in the following weeks.
