GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Playing to their final home game of the regular season, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team was bested by the MSU Roadrunners this afternoon in a 3-0 loss at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Despite both teams being almost even in shots taken at 15-13, the Roadrunners used a two-goal first half and one-goal second half to take the victory, with this being the Mavericks' first loss since they were defeated by UCCS on Oct. 2.
The Mavs are now 8-5-3 overall while sitting at 5-2-2 in conference play and in a tie for third place of the conference standings. They own 17 team points with them vying for one of the four remaining spots in the conference championship that will be determined after their final regular season game.
MSU Denver clinched a spot into the championship tournament with the win with them now sitting at 8-4-6 (6-2-1 RMAC).
The Roadrunners scored in the 29th and 39th minutes of the first half while outshooting the Mavs in that time, 7-4.
Colorado Mesa bounced back to outshoot the Roadrunners 9-8 in the second half but were held scoreless in their attempts.
Following the 60th minute the Mavs also played a man-down to finish the game as they received a red card to make it 10 versus 11.
Of the Mavs' 13 shots, Manuel Ponce Casas led the team with four himself while Cain Castellon added three.
Alejandro Jimenez recorded three saves in the net.
Following the same route as the women's soccer team, the Mavs now head to Westminster this Wednesday as they take on the Griffins for their final regular season matchup. Following Wednesday's results, they will find out when they play next in the conference championship depending on seedings.
