GOLDEN, Colo. – Facing their first ranked opponent of the season, the #20 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team played to a tight 0-0 draw this evening as they tied with the No. 8 team in the nation, Colorado School of Mines, at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
With the tie, the Mavericks now clinch a spot into the RMAC Women's Soccer Championship and are one of just three teams so far to do so.
Colorado Mesa also remains undefeated in conference play with them now owning a 10-2-1 record overall and are 6-0-1 in the RMAC. In addition, their seven-game consecutive shutout streak is a new school record. Mines with the tie moves to 9-2-2 (6-1-1 RMAC).
This was the second straight time the two schools have tied with each other with last time being in the NCAA Regionals last season.
Playing a defensive oriented game, Colorado Mesa led the offensive categories to start with them outshooting the Orediggers 11-4 and owning the shot on goal advantage at 3-2 after the end of the first half.
The second half featured very similar results with the Mavs owning the shot advantage as well at 16-4.
Despite heavily owning the shot differential all of the shots on net were saved for Colorado Mesa with the Mines' goalkeeper owning nine saves.
Both defenses held strong though the game as much of the ball was controlled at midfield. Coming into tonight, Mines was ranked as another top five defense in the conference with them only allowing three goals in conference play to this point.
Offensively, Colorado Mesa's top shot taker was Kylie Wells with the Senior having six. Ellie Duncan ranked in second with five.
Keely Wieczorek faced just two shots on goal with her saving both and now owning 30 career shutouts.
Trekking down I-25 now, Colorado Mesa takes on CSU Pueblo on Sunday for an 11 A.M. start at Art & Lorraine Gonzalez Stadium. Streaming can be found online through the RMAC Network.
