Mavericks fall in slugfest

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The No. 16 Colorado Mesa baseball team battled the conditions and wound up coming up on the wrong end of an absolute slugfest at ASU Baseball Field on Thursday (May 2) afternoon. The Mavericks fell 28-16 in eight innings against the RMAC Tournament bound Grizzlies after allowing 28 hits and committing four errors.
 
The Mavericks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the first inning and led 6-2 after two innings. TJ Rheem hit a first inning homer and was followed up by a double by Braden Winget. Kolby Felix hit the first of two home runs on the day in two run second inning.
 
Adams State clawed back and scored nine in the third and took a 13-10 lead after six innings.
 
Colorado Mesa regained the lead after a six-run sixth inning to take a 16-13 lead after five and a half innings. Felix led off the inning with his second home run of the game along with three others with run scoring hits including a 3-run double by Robert Sharrar.
 
The Grizzlies closed out the game by scoring 15 unanswered runs from the bottom of the sixth to the bottom of the eighth inning.
 
Eight of the nine batters in the Maverick lineup finished with a hit while five of those finished with multiple hits. Braden Winget finished with three hits while Jonathan Gonzalez went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and a double.
 
Evan Bunevich was saddled with the loss and fell to 4-1 on the season.
 
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12pm.
