#13 Mavericks fall in series finale with Chico State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 13 Colorado Mesa baseball team fell just short of completing the four-game sweep of visiting Chico State on Sunday (Apr. 14) afternoon, falling 12-9 in 10 innings at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.

The series finale was a sloppy one for both sides as a total of seven errors were made along with a combined 20 walks issued by the pitching staffs.

Colorado Mesa trailed by two entering the bottom of the seventh inning and used the long ball to get back into it. Brent Renteria hit his second home run of the game, a no-doubter to left center field for his third home run of the season which cut the lead to 9-8 at the time.

He also hit a home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning that tied the game. He finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs driven in along with the two round trippers.

The Mavericks tied it up in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Robert Sharrar. The senior saw a 2-0 pitch and sent it into the batter's eye in center field for his 17th home run of the season and tied the game at 9-9. Sharrar finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs driven in with a double and a home run.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats were able to score three runs in the top of the 10th inning and were able to get a zero in the bottom half of the inning.

Christos Stefanos went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs driven in while Braden Winget finished 2-for-5 with a run driven in.

Tristan Wolf got his third straight start but didn't factor into the decision. Closer JJ Almeda was saddled with the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season.

The Mavericks will return to the road and conference play next weekend as they travel to Colorado Springs for a four-game series with the UCCS Mountain Lions beginning on Friday April 19.
