Sharrar's Walk-off gives #13 Mavericks another come from behind win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Senior Robert Sharrar's three-run, walk=off home run capped the No. 13 Colorado Mesa baseball team's comeback in a 14-13 win over former NCAA West Region rival Chico State on Friday (Apr. 12) evening at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.

The Mavericks trailed 8-0 in the third and 11-2 in the fifth inning before the comeback would begin.

Colorado Mesa trailed 13-8 in the ninth and started the comeback with back-to-back infield singles by Kolby Felix and Christos Stefanos. With one out, Jonathan Gonzalez doubled down the right field line to score Felix and moved Stefanos over to third.

With two outs, Derek Shaver's two-run bloop single that scored Gonzalez and Stefanos extended the inning and brought up pinch-hitter Ethan Nunez. Chico State swapped pitchers and with an 0-1 count beaned Nunez to put the tying run on base and brought Sharrar to the plate.

Sharrar laced a 2-1 count to left field for the oppo-taco, walk-off home run which was his second of the night. His first home run came in the bottom of the eighth inning, a solo shot that landed in the party deck at the softball field. He finished the game 2-for-6 with two runs scored and four runs driven in.

Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a run driven in while Shaver went 3-for-5 with three runs driven in and a run scored.

TJ Rheem got the start at shortstop and had two hits along with Felix and Stefanos to round out the Mavericks with multiple hits.

Liam Hohenstein had a solid performance in relief as he allowed five runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out five to earn the win and move his record to 4-1 on the season.

The sophomore entered the game in the fourth inning trailing 8-2 and was able to deliver zeros in back-to-back innings in the sixth and seventh to give the Mavericks a chance to mount their comeback.

The win inched the Mavericks closer to the Wildcats in the all-time series and now trail by just one win.

The two teams will resume their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm from The Diamond.
