GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse saw its three-game winning streak snapped in its 2024 home opener, losing 18-7 to No. 12 UIndy.
Justine Anderson and
Carson Dickey scored two goals apiece for the Mavs, who fall to 3-3 with the loss. All three of CMU's losses have come to teams ranked in the top 12 nationally in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll.
UIndy scored six goals in both the first and third quarters and tallied three or more goals in every period. The Mavericks were held to just one goal in the opening quarter and held scoreless in the fourth, scoring three goals apiece in both the second and third quarters.
The visiting Greyhounds had a 32-25 shots advantage, had 21 ground balls to CMU's 16 and went 15-for-16 on clear attempts while the Mavericks went 9-for-14. Colorado Mesa did control 15 draws compared to 14 for UIndy.
A total of 20 free position shots were taken over the course of the game. UIndy took 12, converting seven, while the Mavs went just 3-for-8.
Shannon Murphy made five saves in goal for Colorado Mesa while UIndy counterpart Ava Graham made six saves for the Greyhounds.
UIndy jumped out to an early 7-1 advantage, with Greyhounds attacker Joey Fowler scored four unanswered goals on her own between 4:00 in the first quarter and 14:04 in the second quarter to put the Greyhounds up six. Colorado Mesa scored three of the next four goals, with Renken, Anderson and Dickey tallying for the Mavericks as the two teams went into halftime with UIndy up 9-4.
Once again, the Greyhounds got going faster out of the gate in the second half, scoring five of the game's first six goals after halftime, including two more from Fowler. Dickey got her second goal while
Ella Freemon tallied her second goal of the season to make it 14-7 with 2:26 left in the third quarter, but the Mavericks would be unable to score for the rest of the game.
Colorado Mesa will be in action next Friday at Westminster, with first draw at 4 p.m. The Mavericks will be home next weekend for the first time in RMAC play, facing nationally-ranked Regis on Friday, April 5 and UCCS on Sunday, April 7.
