#11 Mavericks open Leadoff Weekend with big win over Yellowjackets

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball kicked off Leadoff Weekend presented by the Courtyard by Marriott with an 18-5 onslaught of the visiting Montana State Billings Yellowjackets on Thursday (Feb. 15) afternoon at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.

The Yellowjackets took the lead in the game on a sac fly in the top of the first, but that lead wouldn't last long. Colorado Mesa's Brent Renteria delivered a two-run single that bounced through the left side of the infield that brough around Braden Winget and Jonathan Gonzalez in the bottom half of the first inning.

Montana State Billings retook the lead in the next half inning on a bases loaded walk with nobody out followed by a run scoring double play.

Once again, the Yellowjacket lead didn't last long as the Mavericks regined the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Robert Sharrar reached on a fielding error by the second baseman with Paul Schoenfeld scoring on the play from third before an RBI single by Jonathan Gonzalez.

After the second inning, Colorado Mesa out-hit MSU Billings 13-5 and forced four errors in the game.

Gonzalez finished the game 4-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and a run driven in.

Ethan Nunez, Paul Schoenfeld, and Derek Shaver all had multi-hit games for the Mavericks. Nunez, Shaver, and Max Berni all delivered doubles in the game as well.

Liam Hohenstein got the home opening start on the mound and didn't have his best stuff but pitched well enough to earn the win. The sophomore allowed four runs on seven hits walked two and struck out two to earn his second win in as many opportunities.

Tyler Glowacki and Jordan Ellison pitched in relief and were outstanding. They combined for three innings and allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out four in three innings of work.

Colorado Mesa improves their record to 3-2 on the season and now has a three-game home opener winning streak.

The two teams will continue the series on Friday with a nine-inning followed by a seven inning doubleheader set to begin at Noon.
