SAN FRANCISCO— Denim Torgerson and
Ryan Wheeler both recorded two pins while
Dayson Torgerson and
Tyler Doyle also went 2-0 to lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to a pair of wins in their first two duals of the young season on Saturday here in San Francisco State University's Main Gym, affectionately known as "The Swamp".
The Mavericks (2-0) won the first three and four of the first five matches before hanging on for a 25-15 win over the Menlo College Oaks (1-1) before opening a 20-3 lead en route to a 28-14 win over the host Gators (0-1).
Denim Torgerson won both of his matches at 141 pounds needing a combined 126 seconds to take out MC's Logan Avina-Barajas and SFSU's Andre Dargani, winning the latter in just 59 seconds.
Wheeler, who redshirted last year, was nearly as efficient at 157 pounds, recording first period pins over the Oaks' Ezekiel Lara (1:28) and the Gators' Zane Stoddard (1:30).
Against Menlo, the Mavericks won five of the matches but picked up three pins, including a dual-clincher from Doyle at 285 pounds. They also received a 10-0 major decision win over
Oran Huff at 133 pounds.
Dayson Torgerson also won the 125-pound match by a 6-0 margin as the Mavericks jumped out to a 13-0 lead after his older brother pinned Avina-Barajas.
The Oaks then got on the board with a 12-10 win at 149 pounds before the Mavericks built a 19-3 lead after Wheeler's pin.
The Oaks then scratched out decisions at 174, 184 and 197 pounds to pull with 19-15 before Doyle built a 14-1 lead before pinning Emitt Mercado with 38 seconds remaining in the bout to seal the Mavericks' win.
After the break, the Mavericks again came out strong against the Gators as
Dayson Torgerson managed an 11-4 win over Zach Wright before his brother's win in the 141-pound bout put the Mavs up 9-4 after SFSU's Johnny Lopez beat Huff, 14-5 at 133 pounds.
The Mavs then extended the lead to 20-4 thanks to a 15-0 technical fall win by
Alex Castaneda at 149 pounds and Wheeler's win over Stoddard at 157.
SFSU's Kyle Botelho, ranked 12
th in the NWCA's Division II Preseason Rankings, then stopped the Mavs' run with a 12-3 major decision win over William Alvarado, in the Mavs' dual meet lineup for the first time at 165 pounds.
The Gators also picked up a decision at 174 before
Jason Bynarowicz dominated Kweli Hernandez-Maitre, 9-1 in the 184-pound bout to put the Mavs up 24-11 while clinching the dual.
The Gators did come back to win at 197 before Doyle picked up a 10-1 major decision win over Laith Gilmore to close out the dual.
The Mavs, who had seven wrestlers ranked in the national individual rankings in their lineups on Saturday, will begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action next Friday (Nov. 15), in what will be the first of just three home duals this season. Action in Brownson Arena will begin at 6 p.m.
