MARSHALL, Mo. – The No. 7 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team wrapped up matches this afternoon (Nov. 23) at the Missouri Valley Open. The Mavericks finished with a program record four top-8 finishers at their respective weights.
Freshman standout
Gretchen Donally wound up in second place in the 160-pound weight class and equaling the best-ever finish for any individual Maverick wrestler at the Missouri Valley Open. She defeated Sierra Mefford from Cumberlands 5-0 in her semifinal matchup before falling to Destiny Rodriguez of McKendree by technical fall in the final.
Senior
Jayleen Sekona finished third at 207-pounds after picking up four consecutive wins on Saturday's day two matches. The Anchorage, Alaska native had a tech fall, two decisions and a pin on the day. Her pin came in the third-place match as it took just 1:40 to pin Alivia White of Iowa to claim the third spot on the podium.
Both Donally and Sekona are now 14-1 on the season.
Sophia Cornish finished in fifth place at 110-pounds after going 2-1 on the day. Cornish earned a 12-1 technical fall win over Dinayah Vazquez of Emmanuel in the fifth-place match to end her tournament with a 5-2 record.
Freshman
Jojo McDaniel placed seventh at 117 pounds after going 2-1 on the day as well. McDaniel pinned Iowa's Ava Rose at 1:44 in the seventh-place match to finish the tournament with a 7-2 record.
The Mavericks will be back in action at the Chadron State Open on Saturday December 7.
