SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A 15-2 scoring run over a five-minute span Friday shifted all the momentum to the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team.
Down 20-15, the Mavericks turned that early deficit into a 75-48 runaway victory over Fort Lewis on the first day of the Westminster Invite at Behnken Field House.
In the midst of that run, however, the Mavericks (2-1) lost sophomore guard Mason Rowland to an injury. Rowland was fouled on a drive to the basket in the final seconds of the first quarter, hitting the floor hard, and did not return to the game.
Rowland had scored eight points, with two assists and one steal, in the first quarter.
Point guard Kylie Kravig and wing Riley Hayes helped make up for the loss of Rowland, CMU's second-leading scorer, both scoring in double figures.
Kravig finished with 17 points, one of her career high, 10 assists and three steals, and Hayes, who had three points in the first quarter, ended up with 13. Olivia Reed Thyne also scored 17 points and had eight rebounds.
In that decisive scoring run, Reed Thyne made a pair of free throws, followed by a driving layup by Kravig, who drew a foul and converted a three-point play to tie the game at 20-20 at the end of the first quarter.
Kravig opened the second quarter with a jumper, and after Fort Lewis scored, Sophie Hadad burned a 3-pointer after Reed Thyne grabbed an offensive rebound. Reed Thyne went inside for a bucket, then hit a 3-pointer for a 30-22 lead with 6:14 to play in the first half.
Colorado Mesa was up 36-30 at the break and the Mavericks took complete control in the third quarter, outscoring the Skyhawks 19-5 to push the lead to 55-35.
With Reed Thyne scoring eight points in the third, the Mavericks shot 47% (8 of 17) and held the Skyhawks to 20-percent shooting (2 of 10).
Mesa's lead swelled to 31 points with just more than one minute to play and the reserves on the floor.
For the game, Colorado Mesa shot nearly 54% from the field and made 12 of 15 free throws. Fort Lewis shot 40% — from the field, the 3-point line and the free throw line — and committed 21 turnovers, leading to 25 Maverick points. CMU's bench doubled up the Skyhawks' reserves, 28-14.
The Mavericks face St. Edward's at 1 this afternoon. The Hilltoppers defeated Westminster 78-70 on Friday.
