Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dylan Weaver, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

Men’s Soccer scores five times in shutout of Adams State

Alamosa, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team would earn a much-needed victory this afternoon when they took down the Grizzlies of Adams State University in a dominant 5-0 decision on ASU Turf Field. With the win the Mavericks break their two-game losing streak after falling twice last week to ranked opponents.

This is the second time this season that CMU has scored five goals in a match, with the last time being against Simon Fraser University on Sept. 21 in a 5-0 victory.

CMU now holds an overall record of 5-8-2 and are 2-5-1 in the RMAC. Adams State falls to 2-10-2 and remains winless in conference play at 0-7-1.

In the two school's history, CMU stays unbeaten against the Grizzlies as they have never lost to them. They now are 18-0-2 all-time versus Adams State.

Colorado Mesa would rise to eighth place in the conference standings after today's match and need to continue their winning ways to hopefully earn a bid into the RMAC Men's Soccer Championship.

Offensively, today's match would feature four different players for CMU totaling goals. Daniel Paulsson would lead that group with two himself.

Paulsson would his first goal of the day and give the Mavs the 1-0 lead, when he scored in the 30th minute. Paulson would score on a free kick cross from teammate Matheus Lazzuri from just outside the penalty area. He would flick the ball into the middle of the net from close range on his score. Lazzuri would earn the assist on the score for his third assist of the season.

Paulsson then would score once more in the first half as he made the game 2-0 in the Mavs' favor in the 44th minute. Upon receiving a pass from Marc Bonafe, Paulsson would utilize a spin move around a defender before hammering the ball into the top right corner of the net. Paulsson now has three goals on the year.

The Mavs would lead the match 2-0 at half and record seven shots with three of them on goal.

In the second half Kensho Negi would add to that lead as he made the score 3-0 with a goal in the 59th minute. Negi would be awarded a free kick just a foot outside of the penalty area and in his attempt would hammer a curving shot through the Grizzlies wall of players into the top left corner of the net. Negi has scored three times this season to be tied for second on the team.

The Mavs' offense, still not satisfied with the lead, would score again in the game with a goal by Manuel Ponce Casas in the 72nd minute. His goal would come on a long cross from Dylan Hobson to which he headed into the right side of the net to make the score now 4-0. Hobson earned his first point and assist of his career in aiding Ponce Casas' third goal of the season.

The Mav's fifth and final goal of the day came in the 88th minute when Diogo Silva would score and be assisted by Connor Chilson. Silva has scored twice now this season, and this is his first goal since the Mavs' second game of the year against Northwest Nazarene.

In the net, CMU would see time from both goalkeepers today with Diego Chavez and Diego Kling both appearing on the pitch. Chavez would record the team's only four saves.

The 5-0 victory serves as the Mavs' fourth shutout of the season and the first combined one by their goalkeeping unit. Chavez has three solo shutouts himself.

The Mavs would outshoot the Grizzlies 16-9 in the match with eight of the Mavs' shots being on goal.

Continuing their road trip in Southern Colorado, the Mavs will get tomorrow off before heading to Durango on Sunday to face off with Fort Lewis College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Dirks Field with streaming to occur on the RMAC Network.
