CMU women roll in exhibition victory

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Mason Rowland scored 24 points to lead the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team to an 85-53 exhibition victory Saturday night over Colorado College at Brownson Arena.

Last season's RMAC Freshman of the Year has moved into the starting lineup this season and went 10 of 19 from the field with three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 29 minutes.

Olivia Reed, the reigning RMAC Player of the Year, had 12 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks, with senior point guard Kylie Kravig just missing a double-double, with nine points and 10 assists. She did not have a turnover in more than 31 minutes of playing time.

The exhibition was a matchup of Rowland against her older sister, Kyle, a senior guard for the Tigers, who went 20-8 last season. Kyle made a 3-pointer early in the game, her only points of the game. She also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Mavericks, 25-7 last season, shot 52.3% from the field, hit 11 of 22 from the 3-point line and out-rebounded the Tigers 38-27. Colorado Mesa led from the start, outscored CC 42-28 in the paint, had 29 fast-break points and showed its improved depth, with 32 points off the bench.

Transfer guard Riley Hayes scored nine points, transfer forward Brooklyn Palmer had eight and redshirt sophomore Macy Larsen, who missed all but two games last season with injury, added six, along with two steals.

Colorado College was led by 6-2 junior center Zoe Tomlinson's 15 points.

The Mavericks open the season Nov. 8-9 in the D2 Conference Challenge in Odessa, Texas, playing West Texas A&M and Texas Permian Basin. The home opener is Nov. 20 against CSU Pueblo in a nonconference game.
