Grand Junction, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team would challenge a tough foe this evening in the #5 University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions, but ultimately fall short in the end as they played to a 2-0 decision in favor of the Mountain Lions on Community Hospital Unity Field.
This is the second time the Mavs have faced off with UCCS this season with the last time being a non-conference matchup on Sept. 26 in Colorado Springs. The Mountain Lions would take that match with a score of 2-1.
Following the match the Mavs now move to 4-7-2 on the year while being 1-4-1 in conference play. UCCS improves to 11-1-2 with a conference record of 4-1-1. They are now on a two-game winning streak.
This is just the fourth time this season that CMU has been shut out by an opponent. They have three shutouts in contrast.
UCCS would collect their two goals tonight through one early in each half.
They would strike their first goal in the 6th minute when they challenged with a shot by Lars Walczyk that was deflected by Diego Chavez, but in the deflection would find Miles Seminario in the middle of the penalty box who would chip the ball in for a short goal.
The Mountain Lions would score again in the 54th minute. Similarly to how their first goal came, they would score on a deflected shot by Chavez again with Nick Walker scoring this time.
As a whole, the Mavs would be outshot by the Mountain Lions 15-9 with only two of their nine shots being on goal. Riccardo Legnante would lead the team with two shots himself, one of them on goal.
Chavez would record five saves in the match while giving up two goals. His efforts are highlighted by more than the stats as the Mountain Lions are one of the most potent offenses in the country scoring 27 times in 14 games while only giving up 10 goals.
The Mavs will be back in action on Unity Field this Sunday when they host #25 CSU Pueblo for Senior Day. Game time is set for 3 p.m. following the women's match. Tickets can be purchased online at cmumavericks.com/tickets.
