Randel, Mavericks Beat Angelo State 2-0

DURANGO, Colo. – Sauvelyne Randel continued her breakout campaign with two goals and two-time reigning RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week Keely Wieczorek tallied another shutout as Colorado Mesa took down Angelo State 2-0 in a neutral-site match from the campus of Fort Lewis.

The win avenges a 2-1 win by Angelo State over the Mavericks last season. It also improves CMU to 4-0 and marks the first time the Mavs have won each of the season's opening four matches since the 2001 season. With a win against West Texas A&M on Saturday, the Mavericks will tie the 1997 team for the most consecutive wins to begin a season with five.

Randel scored twice in just 48 minutes off the bench. The redshirt junior from Port-au-Prince, Haiti now has five goals in four games this season and is already just one away from the six goals that landed her a Second Team All-RMAC selection in 2022.

Kylie Wells had four shots, including two on goal, while Mikayla Eccher had three. Angelo goalie Amber Lockwood made five saves for the Rambelles while Wieczorek made three saves in the shutout win. The two teams were scoreless at halftime, but CMU found the breakthrough in the 60th minute, once again capitalizing on defensive mistakes like in last Friday's win over Cal State San Bernardino.

Wieczorek made a save off an ASU corner kick and eventually booted a long ball down to the other end of the field. Randel intercepted the initial clearance attempt by the Angelo defense and lofted a ball over the top that caused Lockwood to come running out of her net. A Rambelles defender reached the ball first and looked to dribble out of danger, but Randel blocked a second clearance attempt, ran towards the loose ball and fired a shot past Lockwood, who was still more than 10 yards out from her own goal line.

Randel was vital to the buildup of the second goal, as well. The redshirt junior received a throw-in deep in CMU's offensive end, boxed out a defender and was fouled as she attempted to turn and run, giving CMU a free kick about level with the penalty spot down the right sideline. Haley Klasner lifted a cross into the box that Lockwood came out and got a hand on, but the keeper's deflection ricocheted right off Randel's leg and into the net for a key insurance goal with six minutes remaining.

Today marks the first multi-goal game in Randel's career, which now includes 12 goals over 45 career games. Randel has scored in four straight matches to begin this season and has eight goals in her past 11 matches dating back to last season.

Sophia Beames got the start for her first game action of the 2023 season. Beames, who has 10 career assists in 48 career matches for the Mavericks, played 38 minutes and recorded a shot on goal against Angelo State.
