GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team closed out the regular season on Saturday (May 6) afternoon with a 20-4 run-rule shortened win over Adams State at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks started early with a nine run first inning that saw 14 batters come to the plate with a stretch of seven straight reaching base. They wound up scoring in five of the six innings they batted in.
In total, 18 position players saw action in the games and another six pitchers saw time on the mound. The Mavericks had 12 of the position players picked up a hit in the game while four of the pitchers tossed a scoreless inning.
Christos Stefanos provided a big bat for Colorado Mesa as he went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, four runs driven in, a double and two home runs. Stefanos' first home run came in the thrird inning and was a two-run shot to left field while his second came in the bottom of the fifth and was a towering solo shot to left field.
Julian Boyd was also a pest for the opponents all day as he reached base in all four of his plate appearances. He finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two runs driven in and three stolen bases.
Harrison Rodgers hit his 12
th home run of the season in the first inning, a three-run no doubter to right field.
Anthony Durbano received the win after pitching a scoreless fourth inning where he allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one to move his season record to 5-0.
Cade Nicol earned the start on the mound and went two innings and allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. It was the Valencia, Calif. native's first career start.
Colorado Mesa finished the regular season at 41-9 and 30-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They will host the RMAC Tournament that will begin on Wednesday May 10 with their game slated to begin at 7:00pm against an opponent yet to be determined.
