GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team is now one win away from reaching the NCAA South Central Super Regional after a convincing 10-3 win over St. Edward's on Friday (May 19) in the NCAA South Central Region #2 Tournament at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.
The Mavericks got on the board in a grand way as
Robert Sharrar sent the first pitch he saw in the third inning off the scoreboard in right center field to give Colorado Mesa a 1-0 lead. The home run was Sharrar's 10
th home run of the season.
The home run gave the Mavericks 100 home runs for the season and 100 stolen bases for the season. That is the first time in program history that a Colorado Mesa team accomplished that feat.
Later in the third,
Stevenson Reynolds ripped an RBI single up the middle while
Christos Stefanos smashed a two-run double to the gap in left center field making the score 4-0 after three innings.
Colorado Mesa added two more runs in the fourth inning on a
Conrad Villafuerte RBI single to right field followed by a RBI ground out by Reynolds to add to the lead and make it 6-0.
Fast forward to the sixth inning with one out,
Julian Boyd singled to left field then Villafuerte followed with a fly out to right field. With Reynolds at the plate, Boyd stole second and while that may not seem important as he was stranded at second base in the inning it was very important. The stolen base gave Boyd 37 for the season which breaks one of the Mavericks longest standing records for stolen bases in a season. He broke Trask Munoz's record of 36 stolen bases which occurred during the 2004 season.
Declan Wiesner blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh as he drove the first pitch he saw to right center field for a three-run home run to give his team a 9-0 lead. The home run was Wiesner's sixth of the season.
The Mavericks would tally one more run in the eighth on a passed ball which was plenty for the Maverick pitching staff on the evening.
True freshman
Liam Hohenstein was outstanding in his first NCAA postseason start. He pitched seven shutout innings and was nearly unhittable. In fact, he didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning when a ground ball was just barely out of the reach of shortstop
Harrison Rodgers. He walked four and struck out seven in seven innings of work to improve to 9-0 on the season.
After 122 pitches, he handed the ball off to fellow freshman
Bridger Clontz who didn't have his best stuff. He was unable to get out of the eighth inning and gave way to junior
Cooper Vasquez.
Vasquez was able to record the final out of the inning and pitch a scoreless ninth for a perfect inning and a third of work.
The Mavericks and Hilltoppers will conclude the regional tomorrow at 2:00pm from The Diamond. If the Mavericks win, they would be off to the NCAA South Central Super Regional Tournament. If the Hilltoppers win, the two teams would play one more game beginning at approximately 6:00pm.
