PUEBLO, Colo. –
Jacob Rhoades collected his first win of the season on the mound as he led the #19 Colorado Mesa baseball team to a 7-3 win over the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on Thursday (Apr. 6) afternoon to open the four-game series at Rawlings Field.
Rhoades (1-2) retired the first eight batters he faced before issuing a walk and he didn't surrender a hit until the fifth inning, He faced the minimum number of hitters into the seventh inning before giving up the first ThunderWolf runs of the game.
The Layton, Utah native finished the game allowing two runs on three hits, walked two and tied a season-high with seven strikeouts. He threw 85 pitches and lowered his ERA by almost a full run.
Cade Nicol followed Rhoades and pitched the eighth allowing one run on three hits while facing five batters. CSU Pueblo had runners on first and second with one out and their best hitter, Reggie Williams, at the plate when Nicol wheeled and picked off Cole Knightley at second base. He then got Williams to fly out to right field to end the threat.
Anthony Durbano pitched the ninth and slammed the door shut on the win.
Colorado Mesa scored in six of the nine innings they batted in but still stranded 10 runners on base. They got the scoring going in the second inning on a RBI double by
Stevenson Reynolds that drove in
Robert Sharrar.
The score would remain 4-0 into the seventh inning before a ThunderWolf miscue opened the margin of the game. Sharrar hit a high fly ball to left center field that the CSU Pueblo player dropped that allowed two runners to score to make the game 6-0.
Julian Boyd,
Conrad Villafuerte, and Reynolds all finished the game with three hits.
Boyd went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, and a triple to lead the group. He fell just a home run short of the cycle.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 24-8 on the season and 15-2 in the conference while the ThunderWolves fall to 12-20 and 9-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader (two seven inning games) beginning at 1pm tomorrow.
