GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – All Colorado Mesa needed to do to secure the best RMAC finish in program history was not slip up against a Westminster team that they defeated 18-7 earlier in the year.
The Mavericks were able to put all the suspense to bed before halftime, scoring 12 straight first-half goals and the Griffins 17-8. With the win, CMU finishes the RMAC season tied with national No. 7 Regis at 9-1 overall and now officially have a share of the RMAC title for the first time in program history.
Caroline Ohngemach,
Courtney Havel and
Kiley Davis all had hat tricks for the Mavericks, leading a charge of 10 different CMU players to find the net. The Mavs led by as many as 13-1 and 16-4 before Westminster scored four times in the fourth quarter to make the final score more respectable.
The Mavericks put 26 of their 27 total shots on goal to never let the Griffins defense get comfortable. Colorado Mesa had the draw control edge 14-11, scooped 19 ground balls to Westminster's 13 and only committed three turnovers all game long.
After Westminster's Shaina Shoughro tied the score at 1-1 with 9:17 left in the first quarter, it only took the Mavericks 12 seconds for
Xcaret Salvador to find the net off an assist from
Caroline Ohngemach. Less than a minute after that, Ohngemach scored herself with an assist from
Courtney Havel.
Kiley Davis followed with two unassisted goals before Ohngemach,
Ali Bryant, Havel and
Elizabeth Renken all scored to allow CMU to end the first quarter with a 9-1 lead.
The Mavs' scoring run would reach 12 goals after Havel scored twice followed by strikes from
Brianna Anderson and
Justine Anderson to make it 13-1 with just over 25 minutes gone, and from there, the Mavericks were coasting.
Shannon Murphy got a rare rest as
Brianna Anderson came into the cage recorded a save, goal conceded and caused turnover, making her became the first player in Maverick history to score a goal and make a save in the same game.
Colorado Mesa's historic share of the RMAC title as a breakthrough for the program and for the RMAC in general, which has seen only two teams win championships: now-Division I Lindenwood (2014-2018) and Regis (2019, 2021-22). Because of a goal differential tiebreaker created when Regis beat CMU by six goals in Denver and the Mavericks only beat Regis by one goal in Grand Junction, Regis has earned the No. 1 seed and the right to host next week's RMAC Championships.
The Mavericks will be the No. 2 seed and face the conference's No. 3 seed in the RMAC semifinals on May 5. The No. 3 seed will not be finalized until current third-place UCCS faces Fort Lewis to conclude the RMAC season on Sunday.
