Mavs drop season finale in PacWest Tourney

SURPRISE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis season came to an end on Thursday evening here at the Surprise Tennis Center where the Mavs fell 4-1 to regionally-ranked Fresno Pacific University in the consolation round of the Pacific West Conference Championships.

The eighth-seeded Mavericks finished the year with a 13-13 record while the Sunbirds, who came into the tournament ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II West Regional Rankings and in the same spot of the tournament seeds, improved to 12-8 after suffering a 4-3 upset at the hands of No. 12 seed Stanislaus State on Wednesday, likely ending their hopes of an NCAA Tournament at-large berth.

On Thursday, the Mavericks received a convincing 6-3, 6-2 singles win from freshman Kristen Thomas at No. 6 while each of the top four flight matches went to three sets.  However, the Sunbirds pulled out two of those at No. 1 and 3 while the other two went unfinished.

The Californians also won a tie-breaker in a straight set win at No. 5 singles after winning both of the completed doubles matches.

Thomas, in the lineup as Third Team All-Pac West selection Makenna Livingston was not able to go in the No. spot defeated Daimy Paula.

Issy Coman, who got the No. 1 nod, and Julianna Campos, playing in the No. 4 spot on Thursday evening won the first sets of their matches against Lea Falentin and Audrey Ouellet, respectively, but could not hold to their early leads as Falentin came back to win the second and third sets by 6-3 and 6-4 scores to clinch the overall dual while ending Coman's 9-match winning sreak.

CMU's Macy Richards and Halle Romero also won the second sets of their matches in the second and third flights.  However, Romero lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to Sanne Brull at No. 3 while Richards held a slight 1-0 lead in the third set of her unfinished No. 2 singles match against Nayuma Subba.
