GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse remained undefeated in the RMAC, never looking back after jumping out to a 10-goal lead in the first quarter during an 18-7 win over Westminster at Community Hospital Unity Field on Saturday.
The Mavericks improve to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play ahead of the season's first showdown with undefeated No. 3 Regis on Thursday in Denver.
Kiley Davis scored five goals, including four in the first quarter, plus an assist to pace the Mavericks offensively. Five other CMU players scored two goals apiece:
Regan Wentz,
Justine Anderson,
Ali Bryant,
Caroline Ohngemach and
Amber Wennerstrom. For Wennerstrom, the two goals tripled her season total as the junior had entered the game with one goal in 2023.
Although the game was statistically pretty close in the final three quarters, it never felt that way due to the scalding start that the Mavericks had. Davis scored twice within the first minute of game time and by the time Davis completed her hat trick with 10:24 remaining in the first period,
Justine Anderson and
Regan Wentz had also scored to spot CMU a 5-0 lead before five minutes of game time had elapsed.
The Mavs didn't let up, scoring five more times by the time the first quarter ended.
Ali Bryant scored and then assisted
Peyton Ivey's goal,
Justine Anderson scored for a second time and
Courtney Havel had a pair of assists, setting up
Caroline Ohngemach and Davis. The game initiated a running clock at 1:32 in the opening period after the Mavericks went up 10-0.
Westminster had greater success after the teams switched attacking directions, with Grace Carico scoring twice to trim the lead. The Griffins scored five times in the second quarter, but the Mavericks scored three times, including a disastrous moment for Westminster when a defender passed the ball past her goaltender into her own net.
Just like in the first quarter, Colorado Mesa would hold Westminster scoreless for 15 minutes after halftime, extending a 13-5 halftime lead all the way to 18-5 by the time
Amber Wennerstrom scored her second goal with 10:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Jakeman got on the board for the Mavs in the third quarter while Davis added her fifth and Wentz and Bryant tallied their second goals.
Two late goals from Westminster didn't do anything to change the final outcome.
Brianna Anderson got 2:29 in goal for the Mavericks, giving starter
Shannon Murphy her first rest of the regular season. Anderson conceded one goal for CMU.
Up ahead for the Mavs is a two-game road trip to face Regis on Thursday and UCCS on Saturday, battling the schools picked immediately ahead (Regis, first) and behind (UCCS, third) the Mavericks in the RMAC Preseason Poll. Thursday's game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. as the Mavs will seek to defeat Regis for the first time in school history.
