GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the four-game sweep of the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Monday (Mar. 20) with a 14-12 win at Darden Field to move their record to 7-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
The Mavericks built a 5-0 lead after two innings and continued to build throughout the game as they reached double digit runs for the third time during the series. They led 14-6 after seven innings and that was things got interesting.
Mines scored one in the eighth and five in the ninth with two outs in the final frame.
Isaac Hayen was able to come in and throw one pitch to record the final out and pick up his first save of the season.
Colorado Mesa had four players finish with three hits in the game with
Harrison Rodgers and
Robert Sharrar each hitting home runs.
Rodgers went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two runs driven in, a double and he hit his seventh home run in the sixth inning. He deposited a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right field for his second round tripper of the weekend.
Sharrar also went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, two runs driven in, a stolen base and his fifth home run of the season. He sent the first pitch he saw in the seventh inning over the wall in right center field…barely. The ball hit the top of the yellow pipe that was on top of the wall and bounced over for his third big fly of the weekend.
Declan Wiesner hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the second inning that helped give the Mavericks a 5-0 lead.
Braden Winget and
Julian Boyd also had three hit games.
Cole Seward got the start and pitched well before running into trouble in the fifth inning. He gave way to his bullpen and freshman lefty
Bridger Clontz.
Clontz earned the win in relief after pitching an inning and two-thirds of shutout baseball. He allowed one hit and struck out four in just 26 pitches.
The win gave head coach
Chris Hanks 999 wins in his career and he will look to get number 1,000 on Friday when the Mavericks travel to Lakewood for a four-game series with Colorado Christian.
