Mavericks explode for 20 hits in 15-2 run-rule win

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team scored in six of the seven innings they batted in a 15-2, run-rule, win over the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in game one of the series at Darden Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
 
After going scoreless in the first inning, the Mavericks plated four in the second, one in the second, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and five in the seventh. The scored their 15 runs on 20 hits including seven that went for extra bases.
 
Second baseman Jonathan Gonzalez delivered the big blow in the second inning as he delivered a three-run home run to center field for his first of the season. His shot came on a 3-1 pitch and drove in Declan Wiesner and Rob Sharrar. He finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and the three runs driven in.
 
In all the Mavericks hit four home runs as Wiesner, Conrad Villafuerte and Sharrar all hit their third home run of the season. Sharrar hit his in the third, a solo shot to right field while Wiesner's came in the fourth on a solo homer to left. Villafuerte's, also a solo home run, came in the fifth inning to left field.
 
All three home run hitters finished the game with three hits.
 
Julian Boyd finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two runs driven in with a double.
 
That was all freshman Liam Hohenstein would need in his third start of the season. Hohenstein (2-0) allowed two runs on two hits, walked five and struck out five in five innings of work.
 
He gave way to his bullpen and sophomore Kyle Miller in his second appearance of the season. The Pueblo native allowed just two hits and a walk in two scoreless innings.
 
The two teams will continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at Noon from Darden Field.
