Balanced Mavs out to 2-0 start

Four players score in double figures

BURNABY, British Columbia — What had been a double-digit lead was cut to only one point in the first minute of the fourth quarter Saturday night in the D2CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic.

A 22-6 run took care of that, with the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team racing to a 77-60 victory over host Simon Fraser University at Langley Events Centre.

Another balanced scoring attack and tenacious defense late has the Mavericks 2-0 to open the season, with four players scoring in double figures.

Olivia Reed took control in the paint with 20 points and 14 rebounds, and point guard Kylie Kravig added a dozen points and nine assists.

Two bench players once again had huge nights. Freshman guard Mason Rowland followed her 22-point debut with 17 points, and sophomore forward Josee Steadman also scored 17 points, providing the primary outside scoring by hitting five of eight 3-pointers.

Thanks to shooting 61.5% (8 of 13) in the fourth quarter, the Mavericks bounced back from a sluggish third quarter, when they shot only 26.6% (4 of 15) to see their lead evaporate. A 3-pointer by Kravig to open the third-quarter scoring gave the Mavericks a 43-31 lead, but the Wisotzki sisters, Jessica and Sophia, brought the Leafs back, and with 2:23 to play in the third quarter, CMU's lead was down to 49-48. Reed drew a foul inside and hit one of two free throws, and Steadman dropped in a 3-pointer. Simon Fraser's Arman Dulai hit a 3-pointer with only four seconds to play in the quarter, pulling the Leads within two, 55-53.

An SFU free throw made it a one-point game at the 9:22 mark, and that's when the Mavericks regained control.

Rowland hit a pair of free throws and Steadman scored inside, followed by a jumper from Kravig. The defense, meanwhile, held Simon Fraser scoreless for nearly three minutes, allowing CMU to ease out to a 10-point lead. The Mavs slowly built the advantage to 18 on a jumper inside by Reed with two minutes remaining before CMU coach Taylor Wagner cleared the bench.

For the game, the Mavericks shot 48.3%, running their half-court sets with precision, and out-rebounded Simon Fraser 39-25, led by Reed's 14. The sophomore forward is averaging 17.5 points and 14 rebounds in the first two games, and CMU's bench players have contributed 74 points in the opening weekend, with Rowland averaging a team-high 19.5 points and Steadman, who averaged 2 points a game last season as she was coming off an injury, is fully healthy and scoring at a 15.5-point clip.

The Mavericks have a quick turnaround to close out the Tip-Off Classic, facing the University of Alaska Fairbanks at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Colorado Mesa's home opener is Nov. 10 in the D2 Conference Challenge. Tipoff against West Texas A&M is at 4 p.m. at Brownson Arena.
