HUNTSVILLE, Ala.— Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball players
Taylor Scherff and
Gracyn Spresser opened up play at the AVCA Fall Collegiate Beach National Championships on Friday here at the John Hunt Park Sand Volleyball Complex. The Maverick duo lost all three of their Pool 5 matches.
Seeded 60
th overall amongst the 64 pairs, who were divided into 16 4-pair pools, Scherff and Spresser opened up the tournament against Florida State's No. 5 seeded Madelyne May Anderson and Skyler Germann, who recorded a 21-14, 21-14 win over the Maverick duo.
Scherff and Spresser then battled Arizona State's Daniella Kensinger and Ava Williamson, seeded 28th. The Sun Devil duo pulled out a 24-22 first set win and then trounced the Mavs, 21-6 in the second set.
The Mavs then wrapped up pool play against Cal Poly's Izzy Martinez and Piper Naess, who recorded a 21-15, 21-14 win as the 37
th seed. That victory allowed the Mustang pair to go 2-1 and finish second in the pool behind Anderson and Germann, who went 3-0. Both pairs qualified for championship bracket.
The Maverick pair, one of just three Division II duos in the entire field, will continue the tournament Saturday in consolation bracket play. They will also play on Sunday.
Kensigner and Williamson will also be in the consolation bracket after going 1-2 on Friday although both of their losses came in three sets by just five combined points.
