DENVER, Colo. — Five players scored in double figures Monday (Nov. 20) as the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team handled Colorado Christian 77-61 in a nonconference game at Auraria Event Center.
Freshman Mason Rowland again was outstanding off the bench, scoring 21 points, one shy of her career high. She added six rebounds, two assists and one steal in 31 minutes for the Mavericks, who improved to 6-1.
Sophie Hadad scored 17 points, a career high for the third straight game for the redshirt junior from Fort Collins. Hadad had 12 points against Texas Permian Basin, then followed it up with a 16-point effort Sunday against Fort Hays State. By hitting 5 of 7 shots from beyond the 3-point line, she bettered that mark by one against the Cougars.
Kylie Kravig had 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists, with Olivia Reed adding 11 points and 9 boards and Laura Gutierrez chipping in 10 points, a pair of assists and two steals.
The Cougars took an early 9-2 lead, but Hadad hit back-to-back 3-pointers, triggering a 13-5 scoring run that gave CMU the lead for good, 15-14, when Gutierrez hit a layup with 4:02 to play in the first quarter.
It was the only lead change of the game — the Mavericks led the rest of the way, building a 12-point advantage by halftime and never allowing the Cougars to get closer than 9 points in the second half.
In the first and third quarters, CMU shot well over 50% from the field, making 10 of 17 shots (58.8%) in the first quarter and 9 of 16 (56.2%) in the third, and shooting 49.2% for the game. Led by Hadad's five 3-pointers, they made eight, two more than the Cougars, and went 11 of 12 from the free-throw ine.
Rowland, the day after making only one field goal and scoring a season-low five points, was 7 of 13 from the field and 7 of 8 from the line.
CMU committed only seven fouls to limit the Cougars' chances from the line (7 of 9), and out-rebounded CCU 37-29, with every Mavericks who played grabbing at least one rebound. All eight Mavs who got into the game also scored, and the bench, led by Rowland, outscored CCU's reserves 25-14.
With no Thanksgiving tournament this season, the Mavericks have an extended break before opening RMAC play Dec. 1 at Colorado School of Mines and Dec. 2 at MSU Denver.
