Mavs Lose, Secure No. 2 Tournament Seed

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa missed an opportunity to clinch the RMAC regular season championship after suffering a 3-0 loss to Fort Lewis in the final conference game of the year. The Mavericks will now be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming RMAC Tournament.

Anton Hjalmarsson scored twice, once in each half, and Adnan Elaqad also scored for the Skyhawks, who captured their first RMAC regular season championship since 2011 and won the league after being picked ninth in the preseason poll. Diego Chavez made seven saves in the Maverick goal to keep the scoreline where it was.

The loss was CMU's first since September 7 and snaps what had been the second-longest unbeaten streak in program history at 14 games. The Mavs finish the regular season at 10-3-5 overall and 5-1-4 in the RMAC.

Fort Lewis outshot the Mavericks 19-12, with 10 shots on goal compared to CMU's five. Manuel Ponce Casas had a team-high four shots for the Mavericks and had one shot on goal, along with David Peters, Dimitrios Leonoglou, Joey Joiner and Moses Magens.

Colorado Mesa entered the day with the possibility of finishing anywhere from first to third in the final RMAC standings. Despite the loss, the Mavericks retained the No. 2 seed for the RMAC Tournament, winning a tiebreaker over CSU Pueblo thanks to scoring more total goals during the RMAC season.

The Mavs will have a bye for the opening round of the six-team tournament and will host the winner of a Thursday match between third-seeded CSU Pueblo and sixth-seeded MSU Denver on Sunday at Community Hospital Unity Field. The game time for that Sunday match is still to be determined.
