PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado Mesa's 13-game unbeaten streak came to an end as the Maverick women's soccer program lost for the first time this season in a 1-0 road defeat to CSU Pueblo.
The loss drops the Mavs' lofty record to 12-1-1 this season and 7-1-1 in the RMAC. The Mavericks will face a nationally-ranked opponent next week in Colorado School of Mines and another RMAC frontrunner in Regis at home next weekend at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Carlia Johnson scored her second goal of the season on a perfectly-timed run from a free kick. With a Maverick foul granting Pueblo a kick from about 25 yards out, the ball into the box was flicked on to an onrushing Johnson, who kept her composure to poke the ball into the net despite a heavy collision with CMU goalkeeper
Keely Wieczorek.
The Maverick offense was unable to get anything going all game long, managing just seven shots with only two going on target and failing to score for the first time this season. Colorado Mesa was averaging 21 shots and three goals per game entering the contest.
Despite the offensive struggles, CMU nearly stole a point in the waning moments.
Madison DeHerrera's strike from outside the box got over the keeper's head and was headed towards the far post but clanged off the woodwork with just seven seconds remaining, and CSU Pueblo cleared its lines to end the match.
Wieczorek exited the game after the collision on the ThunderWolves' goal.
Chloe Dody came on in relief for her first game action in a month and made two saves in 22 minutes.
Mira Houck had two shots for the Mavericks while
Abby Fotheringham and
Kylie Wells had a shot on goal each.
