Mavs Roll To Eighth Straight Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's soccer ran their season-opening win streak up to eight games with another dominant win, this time 5-0 over Black Hills State University.

Abby Fotheringham scored two goals in the game's first seven minutes and Madison DeHerrera had two assists as Shelby Steele, Mira Houck and Evelyn Hammer also found the net. The Mavericks seemingly had the ball for almost the entire match, keeping it pinned in the Yellow Jackets' defensive half and outshooting Black Hills State 36-1.

Black Hills State goalkeeper Morgan Wood made 10 saves while conceding five in net for the Yellow Jackets. Keely Wieczorek made the one save required of her to improve to 8-0 in net this season and in her career.

On a Sunday morning kickoff from Community Hospital Unity Field, the Mavericks wasted no time putting in a show for a full crowd including the participants from CMU's Kids Camp this weekend. The Mavericks drove right down the field and earned two corner kicks within the first 40 seconds. After taking the second one short, DeHerrera found Fotheringham at the back post for a 1-0 lead just 55 seconds in.

Fotheringham put another chance over the goal before the four minute mark, then found a second goal just under seven minutes into the game. Again making a run to the back post, Fotheringham got on the end of a Kylie Wells cross. Her first shot attempt was saved by Wood, but the rebound went directly to the Maverick midfielder with a wide open net in front of her from close range. The two goals were Fotheringham's third and fourth of the season and her first since scoring twice in the season opener against Lubbock Christian.

Playing in just her third CMU match of the season after missing some time with injury, Shelby Steele recorded her first point since transferring to CMU from Western Wyoming Community College, igniting the home crowd by scoring directly from a corner kick in the 30th minute.

When the whistle blew for halftime, Colorado Mesa had 19 shots compared to BHSU's one and had placed eight shots on target. Wieczorek made one save, stopping a shot from Black Hills junior midfielder Kayla Osegueda in the 35th minute that was a one-hopper from outside the box.
The Mavs were able to rotate throughout their roster, with only three players logging more than 60 minutes and mainstays such as Mikayla Eccher and Haley Klasner coming off the bench.

Klasner was recognized at halftime for breaking the program's all-time career assist record last weekend, as the redshirt junior now stands alone in Maverick history with 24 assists and counting.

The Mavs didn't ease up on their dominance in the second half, outshooting Black Hills 17-0. DeHerrera found Houck at the top of the box for CMU's fourth in the 60th minute. It was DeHerrera's second assist of both the game and the season. It was Houck's first goal of the season and the fourth of the redshirt junior's career in her 45th game as a Mav.

Colorado Mesa's most eye-pleasing goal of the day was its final one. Mikayla Eccher controlled the ball in midfield and struck a long-range cross over the top of the Yellow Jacket defense. Running in from the left wing, Isabel Schauber met it with her head and lofted it towards goal over the head of Wood, who had come running out of the goal. Waiting at the back post was an onrushing Evelyn Hammer, who headed home from a couple yards out to make it 5-0. Between Eccher, Schauber and Hammer, the ball didn't touch the ground.

Sauvelyne Randel had a team-high six shots, including a penalty kick that hit the post in the first half. Fotheringham finished with five shots and a team-high four shots on goal. Kylie Hoffman also hit the post in the first half and finished with two shots while Ally Wachtel, Kylie Wells and DeHerrera had three shots apiece.

Wachtel played the full 90 minutes alongside Wieczorek in goal and freshman Sarah Dunn, who logged a career-high in minutes playing in pace of Kaydree Rapp, who got the night off.

The Mavericks will get to stick around Grand Junction for two home games next week, taking on Colorado Christian at 7 p.m. on Friday and MSU Denver at 3 p.m. next Sunday.
