ALAMOSA, Colo. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa baseball team needed some magic in the top half of the ninth inning and an outstanding defensive play in the bottom half to defeat Adams State 8-7 in the final game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod weekend.
The Mavericks trailed 7-5 heading to the top half of the ninth inning where
Caleb Farmer led off the inning with a home run and
Spencer Bramwell followed that with a home run of his own to tie the game at 7-7.
After an out was recorded,
Johnny Carr drew a walk and was followed by a walk by
Harrison Rodgers.
Conrad Villafuerte pinch hit for
Matthew Turner, who was 3-for-4 in the game and delivered a go-ahead RBI double down the left field line to make it 8-7.
In the bottom half of the inning with two runners on and an out, Chris Garcia launched a ball into deep right field. Pinch runner and defensive replacement
Robert Sharrar tracked it down and contorted his body around to make a diving catch that preserved one run and possibly both runners on base.
Bramwell finished the game 3-for-4 while Farmer went 2-for-3 coming off the bench.
Stevenson Reynolds also had two hits in the game.
Gage Edwards earned the win on the mound in relief. He pitched the final four innings and allowed one run on five hits, walked two and struck out five to earn his second win of the season.
The Mavericks will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Denver for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games against MSU Denver.
