Mavericks Fall in RMAC Semifinals

GOLDEN, Colo. – For the third time this season, the MSU Denver Roadrunners defeated the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team this time in the RMAC Tournament. The Roadrunners defeated the Mavericks 74-59 in Lockridge Arena during the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Colorado Mesa (23-6) trailed 23-14 after one quarter of play as they made just one field goal but went 12-for-14 from the free throw line to keep the score in single digits.

The Roadrunners (21-8) jumped out to a 14-point lead in the second quarter at 28-14 with 7:34 remaining in the half when head coach Taylor Wagner sent the second unit into the game. The group brought the Mavericks all the way back into the game and cut the lead to just three at halftime at 30-27. The group of Kylie Kravig, Lauryn Deede, Leah Redding, Tia Slade and Savannah Domgaard combined to outscore MSU Denver 13-2 in the final 7:34 of the half.

The starters came back to start the second half but by the time MSU Denver built a nine-point lead at 39-30 with 6:11 to go in the third, out came the starters and the second unit went back in. Despite the second unit coming in, senior Daniella Turner started heating up and scored 12 of her team-high 18 points in the third quarter.

The Mavericks got as close as four points early in the fourth quarter, but MSU Denver slowly built the lead to double digits and kept it there.

Senior Mariah Martin recorded an assist in the game and became the single season record holder in assists with 173 now. She took over the single season record from Jill Teeters (Derrieux) that she set in 1990. The senior also finished with 11 points.

The Mavericks will now await the word of the NCAA Selection Committee whether they make the field of 64 for the tournament. They were in the fourth position heading into the week and finished the final week of the season with a 1-1 record.
