Strong Shooting, Solid Defense Lead Mavericks to 89-55 Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball is start to click at the right time as they put together a solid performance in an 89-55 win over South Dakota Mines on Saturday (Feb. 5) afternoon in Brownson Arena.

The Mavericks (16-4, 11-4 RMAC) improved to 8-0 all-time against the Hardrockers (3-19, 3-13 RMAC) as the 34-point win was the largest margin of victory in the series.

Colorado Mesa jumped out to a 19-14 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They shot over 54 percent from the field and shot an even 50 percent from beyond the arc. The Maverick defense limited the Hardrockers to just a little over 34 percent from the field and just two made three-pointers.

The Maverick starting lineup all finished in double figures and combined for 80 points on the evening. Daniella Turner finished with a game-high 25 points while Sophie Anderson scored a career-high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Anderson also drew the tough guard of one of the elite scorers in the conference in Ryan Weiss. She limited the Hardrockers top scorer to just six points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field. This marks the third straight game where Anderson has limited the opponents leading scorer under 10 points.

Kelsey Siemons and Monica Brooks each scored 13 points while Mariah Martin finished with 10. Siemons also had a game-high nine rebounds and two blocked shots. The two blocked shots move Siemons within one of a tie for second place on the all-time blocks list with Maverick Hall of Honor recipient Pam DeCosta.

They will play at New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday evening then head north for a game against UCCS on Wednesday evening.
