Big Third Quarter Haunts Mavericks

HAYS, Kan. – No. 3 Fort Hays State outscored Colorado Mesa 23-8 in the third quarter and the Mavericks could never recover in a 75-50 setback to the Tigers on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon at Gross Coliseum.
 
Fort Hays State shot 50 percent from the field in the third and held Colorado Mesa for over four minutes in the quarter to build a 12-point advantage at 51-37 with 2:38 to play in the frame. The Mavericks made just three field goals in the third.
 
Colorado Mesa played the Tigers to a draw in the first quarter at 19-19 but couldn't keep up on the shooting side of things. The Mavericks made all three of their three-pointers in the first half then went 0-for-8 in the second half.
 
Turnovers continue to plague the Mavericks as they committed 19 that led to 24 Fort Hays State points this afternoon.
 
Senior Monica Brooks led the Mavericks with 13 points and seven rebounds. She was 6-of-12 from the field and 1-of-2 from beyond the arc in the game. The Shawnee, Okla. Native scored the first five points of the game for Colorado Mesa.
 
Junior Laura Gutierrez chipped in 12 off the bench as she hit on 6-for-7 from the line and pulled down five rebounds.
 
Sophomore Tia Slade added eight points and six rebounds.
 
Tiger Olivia Hollenbeck finished with a game-high 16 points with 12 of the 13 players for Fort Hays State scoring points in the game.
 
The Mavericks will host SAGU American Indian College next Friday for their home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
