Mavs Outlast Western Oregon to Finish the Weekend 2-0

Dere and Eccher score in 2-1 victory

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's soccer team came from behind in Sunday afternoons contest against Western Oregon, securing a 2-1 win to stay undefeated. Lila Dere scored the equalizer halfway through the ninth minute, and Mikayla Eccher scored the eventual game winner early in the second half to give the Mavericks their second win of the season.

CMU outshot their opponent 13 to seven, taking seven shots on goal to the Wolves three. Chloe Dody got the start in goal, picking up her second win while making a pair of saves.

Western Oregon got on the board first, converting off a free kick at the 8-minute mark. A minute and a half later the Mavericks were awarded a penalty, taken by none other than Lila Dere who snuck it into the bottom right corner to tie it up.

The rest of the half saw CMU stay on the attack taking seven shots, while limiting WOU to just two.

Just four minutes into the second half, the Mavs took the lead off the foot of Mikayla Eccher. Dere took the initial shot, bouncing off the keeper's glove and to an open Lexi Newton who tapped it over to Eccher who had a clear shot and an open net.

WOU took five shots throughout the second half, and had an opportunity to tie it up with four minutes left to play. A CMU foul in the box, set up a penalty kick for Chloe Smith. Her shot would miss wide, as Maverick fans took a sigh of relief.

On the defense for the rest of the match, the early second half goal by Eccher sealed the deal.

The team will turnaround and hit the road to Salt Lake City, Utah where they'll play a few neutral site matches against Northwest Nazarene and Minot State.
