COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore
Andrew Morris pitched a complete game to lead the No. 2 ranked Mavericks to a 7-4 win over an upstart, No. 14 ranked UCCS Mountain Lion squad in the series opener at Mountain Lion Field.
Morris, the reigning RMAC and NCBWA Pitcher of the Week, battled through the first four innings before really dialing it in during the final five innings of action. He allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out 14 in his nine innings of work.
The Mountain Lions scored all four runs in the first four innings of play with two coming in the first and one in the third and fourth innings. Morris retired nine in a row from the fourth to the seventh inning and faced just two over the minimum from the fifth through the ninth inning.
The Monarch High School product lowered his season ERA to 2.35 and has thrown 23 innings and has allowed 22 hits while striking out 43 on the season.
The big boys in the middle of the Maverick lineup did what they are supposed to do as
Matthew Turner,
Haydn McGeary,
Spencer Bramwell, and
Jordan Stubbings combined to go 10-for-18 with six RBIs, five runs scored and six extra base hits in the game.
Bramwell was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two runs driven in, two doubles and a triple while catching Morris' gem.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12pm at Mountain Lion Park. Both games will be seven innings in length.
