Men's Soccer NCAA Tournament Run Halted by Cal State LA

Los Angeles, Calif. – The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team saw their fall campaign come to a heartbreaking end Friday night in the NCAA Tournament third round as they fell to host (1) Cal State LA on an overtime golden goal by the Golden Eagles.

The Mavericks were dominant across the board outshooting their opponent 17-13 and a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. They also took to the corner nine times.

Daisuke Takanaka takes credit for the team's goal on the night scoring in the 42nd minute to take a 1-0 lead just before the half. Gabriel Peres was the Mavs leading shot taker, striking six and putting four between the posts.

Connor Durant collected three saves on the night. Alvaro Unanua seeing a lot of action in the opposite goal, finishing with 11 saves.

Using his speed, Takanaka moved upfield, beating the last line of defense to slide one into the far post to give Colorado Mesa a 1-0 edge.

In the following Golden Eagles possession, they took a corner kick, drawing a foul inside the box for a penalty kick. The shot rattled off the post but found its way into the net to even the score before the team's broke for half.

The Mavericks continued to put pressure on their opponent's goals, nearly breaking through on multiple occasions.

Cal State LA's game winner would come in the 92nd minute as a cross into the front of the box was shot into the top left corner.

The Maverick's season comes to an end, finishing with a 16-3-2 record.
