Grand Junction, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team is headed back to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament championship match, putting three goals past the No. 6 seeded Regis Rangers in Sunday's semifinal on Community Hospital Unity Field.
The Mavericks outshot the Rangers by a 22-13 margin, and put five more shots on goal, 9-4.
Connor Durant collected four saves on the afternoon, Cooper Erickson with six in the opposite goal.
When the teams met back in October, the Mavericks tallied two goals within the first 10-minutes, this time around their goals being spread out across the 90-minutes.
CMU threatened early as
Fernando Morales put two shots on goal just 17-seconds between each other, Erickson coming away with the saves to keep the game scoreless.
Colton Shafer finessed the team's first goal of the afternoon in the 11
th-minute, chipping a ball into the top right-hand corner.
Daisuke Takanaka earned the assist, setting up Shafer with open space in the box.
Four minutes later, the Mavericks pushed their lead to two as Morales finally broke through with a header into the upper half.
Ramses Atahualpa moved up field, passing it out to
David Peters on the sideline who crossed it in to assist on score.
Later in the 19
th-minute, the Rangers would get their best opportunity to score of the night, rushing into the box but would be stopped by Durant and cleared out.
Up by a pair going into the second half, the Rangers turned it up a notch looking to cut into the deficit. They kept the Mavs to eight shots, but struggled to convert on the offense.
In the 84
th minute, a Ranger foul just outside the top of the box turned into the Mavericks third and final goal of the day, as
Ethan Anderson sent it over the wall of defenders and placed it perfectly into the upper left corner for his fourth goal on the season.
No. 4 seed CSU Pueblo, upset top-seed Colorado School of Mines on the other side of the bracket, giving the Mavericks hosting rights for the championship. That match will take place Saturday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. on Unity Field.
