Fueled by Fronapfel's Goal, Mavs Triumphant at CSU Pueblo

Pueblo, Colo. -- Decided by just a single goal, scored in the 65th-minute, the Colorado Mesa Mavericks triumphed over the CSU Pueblo Friday afternoon on Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium in southern Colorado, picking up a key conference win and cool down a hot Thunderwolves team.

The Mavs took eight shots, six of them focused between the posts. The opposition took 13 shots, with seven on goal. CMU were strategic in getting to the corner, edging their opponent out 7-3. Fronapfel was the orchestrated three of the team's eight shots, and put two on goal, with the pressure finally getting through to score his fifth goal of the season.

Connor Durant matched his season high, collecting seven saves to secure his fifth shutout of the season. Isa Trujillo, Jorge Rodriguez, Colton Shafer, Ethan Anderson and Raymond Jackson held strong in the back half of the pitch, logging the full 90-minutes to aid in victory.

The offensive threat would come early as the Mavs took three shots in the opening 10-minutes, before the Thunderwolves logged their first of the afternoon. Durant came up with three stops within a four-minute span of each other to keep the game scoreless.

As the clocked ticked down in the first half, the Mavericks appeared to have a breakaway but would be turned away by two of their eventual four offside calls.

After a series of corner kicks, Daisuke Takanaka used some crafty ball handling to beat a defender down the right sideline and toward the goal. He would send a low pass, bypassing two Maverick players before Fronapfel charged in last second and pocketed a shot into the top right corner to take the lead.

CMU's other two offside calls would come following their goal, as CSUP tried to even it up. Despite taking the final two shots, the Mavericks would steal the show and take home a 1-0 decision in their conference opener.

The road trip continues back up the I-25 to UCCS, where the Mavericks will take on the Mountain Lions on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
